Kevin McCarthy: National Debt is a ‘Greatest Threat To Our Future’

Kevin McCarthy, the House Speaker (Republican from California), stated Monday in a speech that the nation’s debt was the “greatest threat” to America’s future and called on President Joe Biden to negotiate with Republicans on the debt ceiling.

McCarthy stated during the conference that he was addressing the imminent debt ceiling deadline.

Americans are being hit by rising prices. Today, nearly two-thirds of all Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, struggling to make ends meet.

China has been infiltrating culture, farmland and skies as they consider us weak.

It isn’t sustainable.

Our national debt is the biggest threat to our future, despite all other dangers.

After meeting with Biden, McCarthy stated that McCarthy remains positive that Republicans will find common ground regarding the debt limit.

Speaker of the House noted that Biden does not wish to reduce spending in order to increase the debt limit and has supported previous House Republican majority agreements:

Here’s what then-Vice President Biden said when he negotiated a debt limit increase with House Republicans in 2011… “You can’t govern”Without negotiating.

HIS words. HIS standard was that. It is the same standard that House Republicans follow now.

Mr. President, it’s time to get to work.

Mccarthy said, “As a senator, you voted against raising the debt ceiling, Mr. President. To quote YOUR words, your vote in 2004 was ‘a protest of the policies that have brought us to this point and a demand that we change course.’”

Biden has actually voted repeatedly against increasing the debt limit, lamenting that the deficit is growing at a rapid pace.

Biden voted in 2006 against an increase to the Republican debt ceiling, which would have increased it from $8.184 trillion up to $8.965 trillion.

McCarthy claimed that Republicans and Biden could and should find common ground regarding a responsible increase in the debt limit.

First, we will continue to sit down and negotiate – just as President Biden did in the past.

The second is to agree on a responsible increase of the debt limit. Finding compromise is exactly how governing in America is supposed to work – and exactly what the American people voted for just three months ago.

We must also work towards a balanced budget, and demand accountability for each dollar spent. Future generations deserve nothing less.

A responsible debt limit increase that begins to eliminate wasteful Washington spending and puts us on a path towards a balanced budget is not only the right place to start… It’s the only place to start.

McCarthy ended his speech with the following words: “Mr. President, Congressional Republicans are ready to act – to save our country and to make America stronger. I hope you will join us.”
