Illegal aliens are not a threat to the United States, according to Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels.
“The majority of people — we have an interdiction team that goes out daily — yesterday, they were out for their shift and had 15 smuggling events … the majority of people we talk to, the majority of migrants that have been smuggled, which I call modern-day slavery what they’re doing to these people, they tell us the reason they’re here is because of President Biden and [give] a welcoming sign.”
Dannels was brave to send a straightforward message like this to the House Judiciary Committee, February 1, 2012. Biden, and all the Democrats, are not ready to share such a direct view of the dire realities of the border.
People like Dannels find his border county a hub for illegal activity. There are many risks associated with Fort Huachuca, a sprawling and remote military base that straddles the border. It is also one of the biggest employers in the county. They are given two choices when they arrive in Mexico: take the shorter route though the mountains and cross an isolated military facility, or go further to reach the middle of nowhere.
They leave behind a trail of destruction, no matter what choice they make. They invade everything they come across, from homes to cars to fields exercises. They are often involved in smuggling drug gangs, which is why the human trafficking levels along the corridor are among the highest. Large seizures of people and narcotics go under-reported on the liberal mainstream news, so many don’t see the issues they bring with them.
In Dannels’ opinion, “Currently, this is the ugliest I’ve experienced.”This is quite bold for someone who has the records and history of the region. It becomes an epidemic when you consider the millions his department has spent on housing illegals.
This metric is the reason Cochise County, just two years ago was among the most secure border counties in America. “Border-related bookings, detention costs counting the year 2022 was $4.3 million, absorbed by my local and state taxpayers … in a rural community, that’s a huge impact.”
The reallocations of Ft Huachuca units to military bases has made this impact even more severe. This has led to many contracting opportunities disappearing. Despite the fact that many rural counties still have residents, there has been little growth. The area is home to other communities like Bisbee, Hereford and Tombstone, making it difficult for anyone to predict anything good.
He hasn’t had to reach out to the governor of Arizona, nor governors from any other states, to assist with the shipment of illegals to sanctuary cities. Although the airport is shared by the Sierra Vista town, which has a fairly large size, it’s not used very often. It could be an ideal location to transport illegals who are still waiting for word from the authorities. The Sherriff, along with his deputy have performed a solid and steady job at the border patrol and kept each other safe.
While this county doesn’t report the numbers places as El Paso does, they are also much more rural. Because of the large population and difficult-to-track numbers of crossings, they are less likely to accurately report figures with the new technology. This is no fault of their own, but rather a byproduct of Biden and other leftists’ diversion of money to grow their voter base with thousands of “asylum seekers.”
