A girl named Madeline, with a vivid imagination and remarkable awareness of how bureaucracy can dash dreams, got her wish when she asked Los Angeles animal control authorities for a license to own a unicorn — if she’s able to find one.
This permit, which was the first of its kind, came with some strings. However, it required that the mythical creature be exposed to sun, moonbeams, rainbows, and had its horn polished with a soft, moist cloth at least once every month.

Marcia Mayeda from the county Department of Animal Care and Control gave the girl a metal heart tag made of rose-colored steel. “Permanent Unicorn License”The inscription is on the back, as well as a fluffy white unicorn doll with purple ears, silver hooves, and a silver-colored horn.
The department’s response came after the girl wrote it a brief letter last month: “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one.”
Mayeda was very proud of the girl “sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance”And for carefully considering “the requirements of providing a loving home to animals.”
The agency posted images of the correspondence, the license, the medallion and the stuffed toy on its social media accounts, with the girl’s last name obscured.
The five conditions of unicorn ownership require that glitter and sparkles be nontoxic, biodegradable and fed watermelon every other week.
