As a result of a storm that pounded the east shore of Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario, snow piles, some of them higher than people’s, submerged parts of New York and Western New York.
Snowfall totals as high as 77 inches (196 centimeters) were reported in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, home to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. The town of Natural Bridge near Fort Drum Army Base reported a little less than 6 feet (1.88 meters)
Some spots saw snowfall that was higher than ever before in this area. This is in contrast to the staggering amounts of snowfall during storms similar in 1944 and 1945.

In some areas, the snowfall accumulations began Thursday night. “would be on the order of historic not only for any time of year but for any part of the country,”Frank Pereira (National Weather Service meteorologist), at NWS headquarters, College Park, Maryland.
A lake-effect thunderstorm, which was created by cold air picking up water from warmer lakes, left narrow bands of windblown white snow. Some communities received feet of snow, others were just short of the snowline.
The accident caused havoc on certain roads, with trucks taking to smaller backroads in order to avoid closures on interstates in the region ending up in gridlock. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz wrote about it on social media. “tractor-trailer demo derby day.”
This also disrupted Robert Junge’s plans for Maria Szeglowski’s wedding, which they had chosen after becoming engaged just a year prior.
Rescheduling for the next week was possible after their reception venue was cancelled. The musician they hired for their church ceremony also couldn’t make it, along with more than half of their expected 180 guests.
They were determined and used one of the two limos that they rented for the trip to take the bride to church. Junge was the driver.

The snow, said he, is a positive side. “going to make for some beautiful pictures.”
The snowfall forced the National Football League to move Sunday’s game between the Bills and Cleveland Browns to Detroit.
Partial sunshine and a break from the snow came in some of the hardest-hit areas south of Buffalo’s center Saturday as the snow bands shifted north.
Weather forecasters expected several more inches to fall between Saturday night and Sunday. Pereira however stated that the snow totals would increase in different regions of the region, rather than increasing in those areas with heavy snows.
Gov. Kathy Hochul mobilized 70 National Guard troops to aid in snow removal in areas that were most affected.
Poloncarz tweets that there were two deaths in Buffalo. “associated with cardiac events related to exertion during shoveling/snow blowing.”

Some communities south of Lake Superior, and east of Lake Michigan have also seen snowfall of up to 2 feet (6 meters).
A snowplow driver in the town of Hamlet, Indiana, was killed Friday when his plow slid off the pavement and rolled over, according to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. Hamlet lies approximately 30 miles (48 km) away from Lake Michigan.
Buffalo is prone to lake-effect snowstorms. The worst was in November 2014. Over three days, the storm dumped snow totalling 7ft (2m) on several communities. Roofs collapsed and more than 100 people were trapped on a section of New York State Thruway near Lake Erie.
