Are you a rat-hater? You are a rat? “somewhat bloodthirsty”New Yorker with great communication skills. “a general aura of badassery”? Then you might have what it takes to be the city’s new rat czar.

Mayor Eric Adams’ administration posted a job listing this week seeking someone to lead the city’s long-running battle against rats. This is the official title of the job. “director of rodent mitigation,”It was nonetheless quickly called the “rat czar”. The salary range for a rat czar is between $120,000 and $170,000.

“The ideal candidate is highly motivated and somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management, and wholesale slaughter,”That ad is read.

Although the posting may seem whimsical, it is actually quite daunting.

New York City’s leaders have attempted to manage the rodent population over many generations with mixed results. Recent increases in rats found in parks and on sidewalks have led to an increase in sightings.

The multimillion-dollar campaign to improve housing inspections in specific neighborhoods and trash pick up has paid off for city rats. In order to kill rats, the city launched dry ice.

Adams demonstrated, as borough president, a trap in which rats were lured to food by a bowl of toxic soup.

Now, the Adams’ administration is looking for a top rat bureaucrat to become the public face of the city’s eradication and education efforts.

“Cunning, voracious, and prolific, New York City’s rats are legendary for their survival skills, but they don’t run this city – we do,”Claim the posting

It is expected that applicants have a sense for humor. “to lead from the front, using hands-on techniques to exterminate rodents with authority and efficiency.”
