LOS ANGELES (AP) — Charles Kimbrough, a Tony- and Emmy-nominated actor who played a straight-laced news anchor opposite Candice Bergen on “Murphy Brown,” died Jan. 11 in Culver City, California. He was 86.
Kimbrough was Jim Dial in the CBS sitcom’s 10 seasons. “Murphy Brown”Between 1988 and 1998, he was nominated for an Emmy in 1990 as outstanding supporting actor in comedy series. In 2018, he reprised his role in three episodes.
The New York Times was the first to report his death, while his son and agents confirmed his death Sunday to The Associated Press.
“Whether on stage or in front of the camera he was a joy to behold,”Kimbrough was represented in the past by SMS Talent, Inc.
Agency said that the actor had died from natural causes at a hospital.

Kimbrough’s wife, actor Beth Howland who played diner server Vera on the 1970s and ’80s CBS sitcom “Alice,”2016: He died. He died in 2016.
SMS Talent reported that Kimbrough was survived by Linda Kimbrough and John Kimbrough. Holly Howland is a stepdaughter. Cody is a grandchild.
Kimbrough was born May 23, 1936 and spent many years on the New York stage scene. For his Broadway performance of the Stephen Sondheim musical, Kimbrough was nominated to a Tony Award in 1971 “Company.”
Kimbrough also lent his voice to a gargoyle named Victor in Disney’s animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
